Polish describes the finishing quality of a diamond’s facet surfaces. Symmetry describes the precision of its shape and the alignment of its facets. They are separate craftsmanship assessments, so the same diamond can receive different polish and symmetry grades.
Neither grade alone describes the diamond’s complete beauty, light performance, outline, origin, or value. Read both with the report’s shape, measurements, proportions, cut information, color, clarity, fluorescence or comments, and the exact diamond’s face-up video.
What does diamond polish measure?

Polish evaluates how smoothly and consistently the facet surfaces were finished. During cutting, each facet is shaped and polished; a laboratory then evaluates surface features and assigns a grade under its own system.
Microscopic polish features may include lines, marks, pits, or other surface characteristics. Their type, location, number, and visibility influence the result. The GIA description of an Excellent polish grade states that no polish defects are visible at 10× magnification.
A high polish grade supports clean facet surfaces, but it does not mean the diamond will always look clean. Skin oils, lotion, soap residue, dust, and fingerprints can dull any diamond until it is properly cleaned.
What does diamond symmetry measure?
Symmetry evaluates the exactness of a diamond’s shape and the alignment, size, and placement of corresponding facets. Depending on the cutting style, an assessment may consider whether the table is centered, whether facet junctions align, how the outline is balanced, and how the pavilion meets at the culet or point where applicable.
Symmetry is more precise than the everyday idea that “both sides look identical.” Shape-specific balance matters:
- Oval: review both ends, the shoulders, side curves, and the centered reflection pattern.
- Pear: the outline is intentionally different from top to bottom, but it should look balanced from left to right along its length.
- Marquise: inspect both points, matching wings, and lengthwise alignment.
- Emerald cut: examine how the table, linear step facets, corners, and center pattern relate.
Are polish and symmetry the same as cut grade?
No. Polish and symmetry are craftsmanship components. A complete cut evaluation can also include proportions, design, durability, weight ratio, brightness, fire, scintillation, and other shape-specific factors.
GIA currently gives an overall cut grade on its traditional diamond reports only to standard round brilliant diamonds. Fancy shapes such as oval, pear, marquise, cushion, emerald, and princess are still evaluated for polish and symmetry, but those fields should not be converted into a GIA overall cut grade.
IGI uses a four-step fancy-shape cut process that includes polish and symmetry, proportions qualification, additional shape-specific craftsmanship requirements, and light-return grading. Check the exact IGI report to see whether an overall cut grade is present.
Copy the fields shown on the issuing laboratory’s document. Do not turn “Excellent polish and Excellent symmetry” into “Excellent cut” unless the report actually provides that cut grade.
What does Excellent polish and Excellent symmetry mean?
It means the issuing laboratory assigned its Excellent grade to both surface finish and facet or shape alignment. It does not automatically mean:
- the diamond has an Excellent overall cut grade;
- the stone has ideal light performance;
- every buyer will prefer the outline;
- the diamond has D color or VVS clarity;
- the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown; or
- the completed ring will be secure, centered, and comfortable.
Those are separate facts. Confirm origin, carat weight, color, clarity, measurements, cut fields, fluorescence or treatment comments, and setting details independently.
What is a Triple Excellent diamond?
“Triple Excellent” or “Triple X” is a trade term for a round brilliant diamond with Excellent grades for overall cut, polish, and symmetry on an applicable GIA grading report. GIA explains that the term is used in the trade rather than as a separate GIA grade.
Do not use Triple Excellent as a generic synonym for every attractive diamond or for a fancy shape that only has Excellent polish and symmetry. Before repeating the term, verify the issuing laboratory, diamond shape, and all three report fields.
How do polish and symmetry affect appearance?
Polish
Surface-finishing features can affect how cleanly light enters and leaves a facet when they are sufficiently visible. At high grades, the difference between adjacent polish grades may be subtle without magnification.
Symmetry
Facet misalignment or outline irregularity can disturb the intended reflection pattern. In elongated shapes, symmetry also contributes to whether points, ends, shoulders, wings, and corners appear balanced.
The complete light pattern
Brightness, fire, scintillation, contrast, bow-tie appearance, and step-cut pattern involve more than two finish grades. Proportions, facet design, observer position, lighting, cleanliness, and the exact diamond all matter.
Why is symmetry important for fancy shapes?

Fancy-shape beauty relies heavily on outline and pattern. A laboratory grade is useful, but face-up photography and moving video remain essential.
Oval
Check whether the two ends appear balanced, the sides curve smoothly, and the dark-light pattern is centered.
Pear
Check point alignment, left-right balance, the fullness of the rounded end, and how the facets meet along the centerline.
Marquise
Check both points, matching wings, lengthwise balance, and whether the outline appears twisted or off-center.
Radiant and cushion
Check corner consistency, side alignment, outline balance, and the distribution of brilliant-style reflections.
Emerald and Asscher
Check the linear relationship among the table, steps, corners, and center pattern. Broad facets can make alignment especially noticeable.

GIA’s current D-to-Z Laboratory-Grown Diamond Quality Assessment, introduced on October 1, 2025, classifies qualifying stones as Premium or Standard. Its published criteria use minimum polish and symmetry thresholds as part of the overall assessment rather than presenting the service as the traditional natural-diamond report format.
If no laboratory document is supplied, do not claim a laboratory polish, symmetry, or cut grade.
What matters after the diamond is set?
Polish and symmetry describe the diamond, not the workmanship of the completed mounting. After setting, check whether:
- the center stone sits straight and centered;
- prongs or bezel sections are even;
- the gallery and shoulders align;
- the diamond is not visibly tilted;
- accent stones follow the intended spacing; and
- the ring has been cleaned before photography and delivery.
